Abstract

Social sciences argue that discrimination against women is not a cultural universal, but it represents the need to assign values and norms that regulate behaviour between the sexes. For society it is necessary to regulate, control and reproduce gender-based patterns of relationships and not to lay down rules that only penalize one pole of the relationship. Why, then, is discrimination so widespread and persistent? In order to respond to this difficult question it is necessary to take under consideration the strength and power relationships that exist between men and women. Power is the element that allows a pole of the relationship to reach its goals by obliging the other pole to obedience and submission. The concept of power is closely linked to the imposition of one’s human domination over another.
